This exhibition is a fragmented photographic portrait of Keelung as I discovered it, a non-linear progression from the mountains to the ocean. I was struck by the appearance and topography of Keelung. The density, the layers of buildings sprawling and clinging onto the steep hills, darkened by humidity and submerged by the ubiquitous exuberant vegetation. A city wedged between those hills, the shoreline and the low-hanging sky, yet a city that has been shaped by its harbour that is a door to the world and reveals layers of history. As an architectural photographer, my work starts with the notion of documenting a particular urban habitat, its structure and its dwellers, but I also want it to be more than that. I want the photos to be rooted in reality, yet I also hope they inhabit a space between documentary and an elusive sense of mystery that emerges from the city's dark walls. When I set out to photograph Keelung a few years ago, the city was already undergoing a major urban renewal. With this project, I also intend to retain a memory of that mystery in the dark tones of the prints. TIME. ADD. TEL. PRICE.
